Awareness campaign on the complicated relationship between AI and gender-based violence online

The campaign, titled ‘‘Between hope and harm: AI’s complex role in online gender-based violence’’ focuses on exploring the often-ambiguous role of artificial intelligence regarding the online gender-based violence. By addressing both the harm AI tools can perpetuate in the digital sphere and what the same tools can do to prevent the spreading of online gender-based violence, the campaign will try to give a vast and comprehensive explanation of the complex relationship between Artificial Intelligence and online gender-based violence.

Campaign objectives

The campaign aims:

• to clarify the role of AI in online gender-based violence
• seeks to highlight the negative impacts of AI, emphasising the harmful ways in which AI can contribute to online gender-based violence, such as through the amplification of harmful content, deepfakes, and automated harassment.
• The campaign will also showcase AI as a tool for positive change, illustrating how AI can be leveraged to combat online gender-based violence by detecting abusive content, supporting victims, and promoting safer online environments.

The overall goal of this awareness campaign is to provide a nuanced understanding of AI’s dual role in both the problem and the potential solution to online gender-based violence.
